Exploring Thessaloniki via Elisabeth Boutique Hotel

Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city and gateway to northern Greece, is often overlooked by international travelers who favor the capital and those much-lauded islands. Yet this vibrant and walkable city perched on the Thermaic Gulf has 2,300 years of history, easily matching Athens.

Thessaloniki combines this rich history with youthful energy, thanks to a large student population, a thriving arts scene, and a laid-back vibe offering an intimate, authentic Greek experience.

Did I mention the food? Thanks to its rich, diverse, and deeply rooted food culture, Thessaloniki is considered Greece’s food capital, and UNESCO recently crowned it a Creative City of Gastronomy.

In spring of 2024, I spent over two weeks exploring northern Greece, starting with three days in Thessaloniki.
