One cannot fault American travelers in Greece. Tempted by the lure of myriad sun-splashed islands in the south, they often overlook northern Greece, the country’s most diverse region.
Macedonians, Romans, and Byzantines all left their marks at this crossroads. Thessaloniki, Greece’s captivating second city and culture capital, is renowned for its gastronomy. The enthralling cities of Kavala and Veria are equally mired in history. An hour from Thessaloniki, Halkidiki boasts sparkling sand beaches in blue hues unrivaled in the Aegean.
This is the land of Aristotle, born in ancient Stagira; of King Phillip ll of Macedon, and Alexander the Great. Indeed, northern Greece mesmerizes travelers who take a chance on its less traveled roads…
